1. Agreement to Terms
Welcome to ScrollPaper. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the ScrollPaper mobile application ("App"), website, and related services (collectively, the "Service") operated by ScrollPaper ("we," "us," or "our").
By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.
Plain English: By using ScrollPaper, you agree to follow these rules. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
2. Description of Service
ScrollPaper is a mobile application that transforms academic research papers into bite-sized, swipeable card formats for micro-learning. The Service includes:
- AI-powered extraction of key claims and findings from research papers
- Swipeable card interface for consuming research content
- Integration with academic databases (PubMed, OpenAlex, arXiv)
- Personalised paper recommendations based on interests
- Reading progress tracking and streak features
- Search functionality for discovering papers
3. Eligibility
To use ScrollPaper, you must:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement
- Not be prohibited from using the Service under any applicable law
- Provide accurate and complete registration information
The Service is designed for researchers, students, academics, and professionals in scientific fields. By using the Service, you represent and warrant that you meet these eligibility requirements.
4. User Accounts
4.1 Account Creation
To access certain features of the Service, you must create an account. You agree to provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration and to update such information to keep it accurate.
4.2 Account Security
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account. You agree to:
- Create a strong, unique password for your account
- Not share your account credentials with any third party
- Notify us immediately of any unauthorised access or use of your account
- Log out of your account at the end of each session on shared devices
4.3 Account Termination
You may delete your account at any time by contacting us at sanjay@scrollpaper.com. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms.
5. Acceptable Use
You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You agree NOT to:
- Use the Service for any illegal or unauthorised purpose
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the Service, other accounts, or computer systems
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service or servers connected to the Service
- Use any automated means (bots, scrapers, crawlers) to access the Service without our express written permission
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the Service
- Remove, alter, or obscure any proprietary notices from the Service
- Use the Service to transmit viruses, malware, or other harmful code
- Harass, abuse, or harm other users of the Service
- Violate any applicable laws or regulations
- Redistribute, resell, or commercially exploit the Service without authorisation
6. Intellectual Property
6.1 Our Intellectual Property
The Service, including its original content, features, functionality, design, and branding, is owned by ScrollPaper and is protected by international copyright, trademark, patent, and other intellectual property laws.
The ScrollPaper name, logo, and all related names, logos, product and service names, designs, and slogans are trademarks of ScrollPaper. You may not use such marks without our prior written permission.
6.2 Research Paper Content
ScrollPaper aggregates and displays metadata from publicly available academic papers. The original research papers and their content remain the intellectual property of their respective authors, publishers, and rights holders.
Our AI-generated summaries, claim extractions, and card formats are derivative works created for educational and informational purposes. We do not claim ownership of the underlying research content.
6.3 Your Content
Any content you submit, post, or display through the Service (such as saved papers, notes, or preferences) remains your property. By submitting content, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, store, and display such content solely for the purpose of providing the Service.
7. AI-Generated Content
ScrollPaper uses artificial intelligence to generate summaries, extract claims, and create card content from research papers. You acknowledge and agree that:
- No Guarantee of Accuracy: AI-generated content may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies. You should verify important information by consulting the original research papers.
- Not Professional Advice: The content provided is for informational and educational purposes only. It does not constitute medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice.
- Supplementary Tool: ScrollPaper is designed to help you discover and understand research papers more efficiently. It is not a replacement for reading original papers or conducting thorough literature reviews.
- Continuous Improvement: We continuously work to improve our AI systems, but perfect accuracy cannot be guaranteed.
Important: Always refer to the original research papers for critical decisions. Our AI summaries are a starting point, not the final word.
8. Third-Party Services
The Service integrates with and relies on third-party services including:
- Academic Databases: PubMed, OpenAlex, arXiv, and other research repositories
- AI Services: Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini for content generation
- Infrastructure: Supabase for authentication and data storage
- Analytics: PostHog for usage analytics
Your use of these third-party services is subject to their respective terms of service and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or practices of third-party services.
9. Subscription and Payments
9.1 Free and Paid Features
ScrollPaper offers both free and premium features. Certain features may require a paid subscription. Pricing, features, and subscription tiers are subject to change with reasonable notice.
9.2 Payment Terms
If you purchase a subscription, you agree to pay all applicable fees. Payments are processed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, and their respective payment terms apply.
9.3 Cancellation and Refunds
You may cancel your subscription at any time through your device's app store settings. Refunds are handled according to the policies of Apple or Google, as applicable. We do not directly process refunds.
10. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement
- Warranties that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free
- Warranties regarding the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of any content
- Warranties that defects will be corrected or that the Service is free of viruses or harmful components
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so some of the above exclusions may not apply to you.
11. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SCROLLPAPER AND ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Loss of profits, data, use, or goodwill
- Damages resulting from your access to or use of the Service
- Damages resulting from any unauthorised access to our servers or your personal information
- Damages resulting from any interruption or cessation of the Service
- Damages resulting from any bugs, viruses, or similar issues
In no event shall our total liability exceed the amount you paid to us, if any, in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim, or AUD $100, whichever is greater.
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless ScrollPaper and its officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or relating to:
- Your use of the Service
- Your violation of these Terms
- Your violation of any rights of another party
- Any content you submit or transmit through the Service
13. Changes to Terms
We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated Terms within the App and updating the "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the new Terms.
We encourage you to review these Terms periodically. If you do not agree to the modified Terms, you should discontinue use of the Service.
14. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
14.1 Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Victoria, Australia, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.
14.2 Dispute Resolution
Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service shall first be attempted to be resolved through good faith negotiation. If the dispute cannot be resolved through negotiation within thirty (30) days, either party may initiate legal proceedings.
14.3 Jurisdiction
You agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Victoria, Australia, for the resolution of any disputes.
15. General Provisions
- Entire Agreement: These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and ScrollPaper regarding the Service.
- Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
- Waiver: Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
- Assignment: You may not assign or transfer these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations without restriction.
- No Partnership: Nothing in these Terms creates a partnership, joint venture, or agency relationship between you and ScrollPaper.
